Too Emotional

It was just true.
“They told you it was too emotional. It was just true.”
Too emotional is the note you get when the scene is working and the room is uncomfortable. It arrives dressed as craft, and it asks you to sand the thing down until nobody has to feel it on the way past.
Some of that note is real. A scene can overplay. But listen to where it is aimed. If it lands on the moment a woman says the unsayable thing out loud, that is not a craft note. That is somebody flinching, and then handing you the flinch as an assignment.
Keep the line. Cut the three around it that explain the line. That is almost always the actual fix, and it makes the scene harder to sit through, not easier.
