Be the Heroine

The victim version is the one where the business decides.
“Above all, be the heroine of your life, not the victim.”
— Nora Ephron, screenwriter, director, essayist
Nora Ephron said this to a room of graduating women at Wellesley in 1996. She wrote When Harry Met Sally, then directed Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail, at a time when almost no woman got to do either job. She knew what this business was and what it cost to take it on anyway.
The victim version of your career is the one where the business decides. The heroine version is the one where you keep writing while it decides. Same rejections either way. Only one of them has you in it.
